Providence Association of Ukrainian Catholics of America – Провидіння
Провидіння history and mission is specifically organized to support the Ukrainian Catholic Church and give a helping hand to the close-knit Ukrainian community. Providence is the only Ukrainian Catholic Fraternal Benefit Society in the United States.
Провидіння History
The first wave of Ukrainian immigration occurred between 1899 and 1914 due to the oppression from Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires. Naturally, these new immigrants settled in areas which showed to be similar to the home they left behind. They had a strong will, not only to survive but also to thrive; their faith in God and their Church gave them the strength to do what was necessary move forward. These same first immigrants are our great grandparents and grandparents, who have truly reached their goals because they have given us the opportunity to be where we are today.
The Beginning
On August 6, 1912, Bishop Soter Ortynsky, the first Ukrainian Catholic Bishop in America, realized the need to create an organization on a national level, which would have the Ukrainian people and Church as a priority. Провидіння was created. At the meeting, priests, cantors and representatives of church organizations were present. Also present, were the owners of the Ukrainian press, who at that time, published a Ukrainian newspaper called “America”.
The original headquarters of the Providence Association was located in New York City. After two years, it was relocated to 817 North Franklin Street, in Philadelphia, which remains our home to this very day.
The Meaning of Providence: Провидіння
The word “Providence” has two very important meanings, both represent our society and what we stand for.
- “the protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power.” Our people whether born in the United States or emigrated from Ukraine, deeply believe in God and his miracles. They sincerely pray for health, direction, and peace. They also pray for their families, their country and anyone who comes in contact who may need help.
- “timely preparation for future eventualities” our goal in providing services for our members.
Mission:
Moral – to sustain and spread the religious spirit of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Material – to assist its members in case of sickness or bad times; to support worthy religious and civic causes.
Religious – to strengthen the faith of Ukrainian Catholics by sharing spiritual messages on our website and on social media, as well as being active with the community.
Civic – to educate Ukrainians in the history, culture and government of the United States in order to make them good and loyal citizens, conscious of their right, duties, obligations and privileges.
Present Day
Honoring Bishop Soter Ortynsky’s vision, we remain committed to the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Most of our branches across the country are located in or near Ukrainian Catholic parishes.
Since our founding in 1912, we have supported Ukrainian Catholic parishes and numerous people of Ukrainian decent with financial assistance. Most of our contributions go towards:
- Parish building improvements or mortgages for new construction
- Sponsorships to Ukrainian Catholic Seminaries
- College scholarships
- Christian and cultural good deeds
- Until 2013, we published the newspaper, “America”
All this is possible due to the sales of life insurance and annuity products.
